Summer 2023: Sex Ed for Every Body
Since I started writing on the internet, I’ve written about the importance of comprehensive sex education. I never received any formal sex ed. But when I was only 21 years old, I was tasked with teaching 13 middle school girls sex ed, because I was their religion teacher. I’ve always said someday I would write about the experience.
I’m not a doctor. I’m not a full-time teacher. And though I had an amazing undergrad education studying moral theology and ethics under my belt, I was certainly far less educated about sex ethics than I am now. But to this day, it’s the unit I am most proud of teaching. Because my students took it so seriously, and I gave them everything I could. Too often, Catholic schools shirk scientifically-informed sex ed in favor of harmful abstinence and purity narratives. I wanted to give my students something else.
This zine is equal parts lesson plans and personal storytelling, complete with an unbelievable rendering of the whiteboard diagram I drew of how to use a condom…
With over 30 full-color pages, it’s the biggest issue of the year. Grab it while you can!
